IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan
Cargin
September 28, 1942 – February 25, 2020
Joan Alice (Wood) Cargin passed away peacefully wrapped in the arms of Jesus on February 25, 2020, at the Monument Health Home and Hospice House in Rapid City.
On September 28, 1942, Joan entered the world via Webster City, IA. She was the second child of Donald and Alice Wood. She had a normal childhood being raised in Webster City with one brother and one sister. She had fond memories of digging tunnels in the snow, roller skating, attending Sunday School and backyard Bible School. Joan was baptized in her junior year of high school. She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1960.
During her senior year in high school, she met her husband, Terry, at the roller skating rink. They would "roller dance" together. They were married on June 9, 1963, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, located in Nashau, IA. After they were married, they returned to Fort Hood, TX while Terry finished his time in the Army. Upon leaving Fort Hood, they returned to Iowa to begin a new life. After a few years in Iowa, they moved to South Sioux City, NE. In 1979, they moved to their final home in Spearfish, SD. They were married for 57 years at the time of her death.
Joan kept busy with ballet lessons, band concerts, piano lessons, piano concerts, sports activities, and selling Avon. She sold Avon for close to 50 years. Her last delivery was made in January of 2020. What started out as a way to help support the family turned into her passion for people. A lot of her customers have become her close friends. Joan had several hobbies when she was younger. She enjoyed square dancing, camping, painting ceramics, and doing bible studies.
Joan and Terry had three children, Terri Jo, Peggy Sue, and Kenny. She always enjoyed attending all of the activities of her children. In 2002, her only grandchild was born. He was her pride and joy. Once again, she happily attended as many of his activities as she could.
Joan was a faith-based woman. Her belief in God has gotten her through many events, good and bad. One of her favorite scripture verses that she felt true for her is Romans 8:28-32
"The Lord may not have planned that this should overtake me, but he has most certainly permitted it. Therefore, though it were an attack of an enemy, by the time it reaches me, it has the Lord's permission and therefore all is well. He will make it work together with all life's experiences for good".
Joan is survived by her husband, Terry; her children, Terri Jo (Delwin) Oedekoven and Peggy Sue Cargin (Steve Cheyney); grandson, Alex Oedekoven; brother, Jerry (Georgia) Wood and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Joan is preceded in death by their son, Kenny Cargin; sister, Peggy Cacek and her parents, Donald and Alice Wood.
