Obituary
Jerry Strong, 66, of Upton, passed away October 12, 2014 at his cabin in the Black Hills.
Visitation will be from 4-6 P.M. on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel in Sundance. Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Upton Community Center in Upton. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Upton. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has established to benefit the Upton Fire Department.
He was born September 15, 1948, in Sundance, Wyoming to George and Alice Strong. Jerry attended Upton Schools, graduating in 1966. He attended Black Hills State in Spearfish, South Dakota, for a year. On September 6, 1968, he married Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Brimmer in Hulett, WY. Jerry began working at Homestake Gold Mine and was shortly transferred to the Homestake Sawmill in Spearfish. He continued to work at the sawmill while Betty finished her teaching degree. In 1972, Jerry and Betty moved to Cody, Nebraska, where Jerry worked on Charlie Gwynn ranch, and Betty started her teaching career. Jerry later worked for the Nebraska Highway Dept. In 1974, Jerry and Betty moved to Upton, where Jerry began employment with American Colloid, where he worked until 1993. Jerry worked at Howard White Construction, working there until 1995. At that time, he began work at North Antelope/Rochelle Coal Mine, working as a plant operator and loading trains, which he did until his retirement in 2008. Jerry was also a volunteer firefighter with Upton Volunteer Fire Department, at one point serving as Assistant Fire Chief. Jerry also served in the South Dakota Army National Guard from 1968-1972.
Jerry enjoyed working on wood projects, spending time outdoors and hunting, as well as traveling all over the United States, including Alaska. He absolutely loved his family but most of all his five grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Dustin (Nicole) Strong and Justin (Jennifer) Strong all of Upton; five grandchildren; his mother, Alice Strong; siblings, Joyce Haptonstall, Dave Strong, Dean Strong, Cecil Strong, Steve Strong, John Strong all of Upton, WY, and Kathy Tarter of Boise, ID. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, sister, Wilma and brother, George.
