On February 21, 2008, Dr. Jerry Miller, 63 of Spearfish, left to go target shooting at the Spearfish Canyon Rifle Range after a long and courageous battle with cancer and will not be returning.
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 24th 2008 from 1:00-4:00 at the Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel.
Funeral Services will be on Monday, February 25th 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Spearfish with Pastor Dan Kent officiating, burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
A memorial has been established to a scholarship fund at Black Hills State University.
He was born on May 29, 1944 in Mitchell, SD, to Henry and Dorothy (Schleder) Miller. He grew up on the family farm outside of Kimball, SD. He attended Kimball High School graduating in 1962. He then attended the University of South Dakota at Springfield graduating with a Bachelors Degree in 1966. He received his Masters Degree from BHSU in 1974 and his Doctorate from Colorado State University at Fort Collins in 1996.
He started his teaching career as an Industrial Arts Instructor at Plankinton, SD from 1966-1969. He then moved to Mission, SD as an instructor and the Director of Vocational and Industrial Education from 1969-1975. In 1975 he moved to the campus of BHSU as a professor of Industrial Arts. He served as the Chairman of the Division of Math, Science and Technology from 1988-2003. In 2005 Jerry was honored for his 30 years of service and commitment to BHSU.
Jerry was a very talented wood worker and loved working in his garage with his tools. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed hunting and spending time at the Spearfish Canyon Rifle Range. He had a true enjoyment and great knowledge of history. In the summer you could find Jerry in the back yard working in his vegetable garden. Jerry enjoyed spending time with family and friends anywhere-especially when there were hot dogs and chicken gizzards being served.
Survivors include his wife Linda Miller of Spearfish, a daughter Cassie (Lenny) Gomez and children Aleisia and Adam of Spearfish, a son Craig (Bobbi) and children MacKenzie and Madelyne of Bozeman, MT, a step-daughter Lesa (Greg) Krajewski and son Daniel of Belle Fourche, a brother, Dwain (Alta) Miller of Chamberlain SD and special friends Amy Ow of Ocala, FL and Kenny Bell of Brighton, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
