IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jerome "Bud"
William Maley
September 6, 1936 – May 27, 2024
Upon graduating from high school William Jerome Maley was asked what he would leave behind. He said, "the teachers in peace". Then he became one! William Jerome "Bud" Maley passed peacefully holding his daughter's hand on May 21, 2024, succumbing to the effects of dementia in Belle Fourche, SD. Bud left behind more than just peace for his teachers. Bud was born on September 6, 1936, in Lisbon, ND. He lived his life through High School in Enderlin, ND, the hometown which he loved and was in his thoughts and stories his whole life. He often said that there could never be a childhood better than growing up in a small town, in the 1950's.
After graduating from Enderlin High School, he attended Morehead State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1958. Two years later Bud received his Master's Degree in Secondary Education from Colorado State University in 1960. Bud loved teaching and education in general. After moving to California in 1960 he began his 36-year teaching career in Torrance, California. At South High School he taught Industrial Arts until 1996, when he retired. In 1961 Bud married his college sweetheart, Mary Agnes Olson. He adored Mary, she often would choose a space in their home, and he would get to work in his woodshop and create a beautiful table, cabinet, or shelf. Their home was full of finely crafted furniture made from exotic woods and materials, many who knew Bud have some of these pieces today. Teaching and wood working weren't Bud's only beautiful legacy. He and Mary had two children, Michelle Renee in 1965 and William (Bill) Jerome 1966. They both had two children Jonathan Quinn Schlekewey (Spearfish, SD) Jackson William Schlekewey (Beverly Hills, CA) and Carson Marie Maley (Aurora, CO) Jake Kenon Maley (San Ramon, CA) respectively. Bud did everything with passion, detail and perseverance. He was an avid golfer maintaining a sub 10 handicap most of his golfing career. Later in his retirement he began turning bowls on his lathe, turning burls and hardwoods into intricate bowls, each being a work of art. Bud's love for family, friends, students and neighbors was evident at all times. He was always happy and willing to talk and brighten other people's days. His "corny" lines became all too familiar to friends and family. He was a joy! He will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents Minnie and Olaf Maley, and the love of his life his wife Mary who he has joined in heaven. He will be sorely missed by his Fab 4 siblings Marlene Noack (Fergus Falls, MN) James Maley (Xenia, OH) Marian Oftedahl (Anoka, MN). Daughter Michelle Schlekewey, her husband Jon Schlekewey and their two children Quinn and Jackson Schlekewey. His son Bill Maley, his wife Brenda Maley and their two children Carson and Jake.
Cremation arrangements were under the care of Isburg Crematory of Spearfish.
