Obituary

Jerard "Jerry" Kent Hargis, 88 of Spearfish, passed away unexpectedly on May 31, 2018.

Jerry was born on June 30, 1929 in Champaign, Illinois to Lloyd and Helen Hargis. He was raised in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois. Jerry graduated from Western Illinois University and served four years in the Navy.

He married Barbara Struening on December 26, 1955 in Lincoln, Illinois. In January 1956, he began his career of 33 years with the Boy Scouts of America in Lewistown, Montana. His career took them to Columbia, Missouri; Omaha, Nebraska; Boulder, Colorado; Wichita, Kansas; Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fargo, North Dakota where he retired. Jerry and Barb moved to Spearfish in 2003.

Upon retirement he became involved in Senior Games. He excelled in race walking, holding several state records and was inducted into South Dakota Senior Games Hall of Fame. He served on the Spearfish Parks and Recreation Board; South Dakota Senior Games Board; active Rotarian and active at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Jerry is survived by his wife Barbara; four children, Michelle (Steve) Vilhauer, Curt Hargis, Julie (Dean) Bounds and Cynthia (Allen) Nouis; eleven grandchildren, Heidi (Keegan) Richards, Steven Vilhauer, Grant, Lauren, Hailey and Madison Hargis, Russell (Molly), Glen and David Bounds, Hannah and Gabrielle Nouis; great-granddaughter, Tessa Vilhauer; sister, Barbara (Ronald) Trimble; special family members, Joy (Hargis) Benson, Kira Lodge, Tony Meirose and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother and his wife, Robert and Bonnie Hargis and nephew, David Struening.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish. The family will be receiving friends at the church from 9:30 am until the services begin. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. Memorials have been established to benefit Our Savior's Lutheran Church or South Dakota Senior Games.
