Obituary

Jeffrey Thomas McInally, 58 of Rapid City, South Dakota passed away on December 28, 2023.  In 2010 he had esophageal cancer surgery and was grateful for extra years in remission. The cancer returned 18 months ago. Valiantly and optimistically, he had chemo and radiation treatments but this time, the cancer could not be beaten. With the help of Hospice Care at Home and friends, he died peacefully in his home.

Jeff is survived by his mother, Joan Mueller McInally, his older brother, Steven McInally (Kim), his younger sister, Lisa McInally Mansure (Bobby), and his nephew, John McInally, all of Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death in 2019 by his father, Loia D. McInally, who was known to many as Mac.

Born in Bryn Mawr, PA, on April 30, 1965 Jeff grew up in Strafford and Wayne, PA, and attended Radnor township schools, graduating from Radnor High School in 1983. After high school, Jeff chose to do office work for his dad at McInally Associates, Inc., an actuarial consulting firm. Jeff, always a perfectionist, produced reports utilizing the new computers. At the same time, he attended Delaware County Community College earning an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in Commercial Graphic Arts.

Jeff always had an artistic knack even as a youngster. He also had a sense of humor, so his sculptures and drawings were often whimsical.  His drawing of "The Abominable Snowman Family," a framed fourth-grade creation, remains on a wall of his mother's home. As a teenager, he had a dark room where he developed his photographs.

In 1987 Jeff wanted to continue his formal education. He thought he would like to go West.  He enrolled in Black Hills State University, Spearfish, SD., where he earned his Bachelor of Science Mass Communications degree. Jeff's grandmother, Katharine Booth Mueller, had grown up at the Spearfish Federal Fish Hatchery where Katharine's father, D.C. Booth was the first superintendent. Jeff had visited Spearfish in 1976. He liked the area in 1976, moved there in 1987, and stayed there the rest of his life.

For the past ten years, Jeff has been the owner of JM Photo & Graphics. He helped clients publish books and videos. Previously he worked for KEVN Fox TV, Diagnostic Imaging Systems, and The Little Print Shop.

Jeff loved the Black Hills. He camped, fished, and hiked with friends, his brother, and his sister. At one time he owned a motorboat and water skis. Later he used his kayak.  Until recently he downhill skied. A year ago, Jeff and his sister Lisa rode bikes down Spearfish Canyon to the D.C. Booth Historic Fish Hatchery, a place Jeff loved. He appreciated the staff and his family connection.

Later in the spring family and friends will meet to celebrate Jeff's life and to inter his cremains in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish, alongside his great grandparents, Ruby and D.C. Booth.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Booth Society, 423 Hatchery Circle, Spearfish SD 57783 www.dcboothhatchery.org or The American Cancer Society https://donate.cancer.org/

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Isburg Crematory of Spearfish. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com
