Jeanette Deon Mathis, 76 of Sundance, deeply loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend too many, went home to the Lord on Monday, November 16, 2015 after a fierce eight year battle with cancer. She was able to end her earth journey at home with family.
Jeanette was born on December 8, 1938 in Corsica, SD to Hans and Martha (Moke) Hemeyer. She attended and graduated from Stickney High School in Stickney, SD. On August 1, 1959, Jeanette married Rodger Mathis in Mitchell, SD. After farming near Mitchell, for nine years, they purchased a motel in Ft. Morgan, CO. In 1971, they traded that motel for the Best Western Motel in Sundance. Since that time, a new Best Western Motel and Amoco Travel Center in Sundance were added to their business holdings. In 2008, Jeanette finally retired and was able to more fully pursue her passions in painting, golfing, gardening, volunteering, and reading interesting books. While battling her cancer, she purchased some chickens so that she would be challenged to rise each day and get outside to take care of them. She told many funny stories about the hens.
Jeanette contributed to her community in many ways. As an active member of the St. Paul's Catholic Church, she taught classes, served as a trustee on the Parish Council, and held various positions within the Council of Catholic Women both locally and state wide. Jeanette was also very active on the Crook County Promotion Board and the Wyoming Restaurant and Lodging Association. For a time, she was a Governor within Best Western International. She taught water aerobics for over 15 years and volunteered at the Bella Pregnancy Resource Center in Spearfish. Many organizations benefitted from her generous financially giving as well.
Jeanette is survived by her six children, Kelly Mathis (Mike) of Sundance, Rod Mathis (Susan) of Gillette, Mike Mathis (Heather) of Scottsdale, Nancy Allen (Mike) of Colorado Springs, David Mathis (Emmy) of Sundance and Kathyrn Cluff of Sundance; 16 grandkids, three great-grandkids; and two brothers, Delmer Hemeyer and Gail Hemeyer of Spearfish.
Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Friday, November 20, 2015 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sundance with the Vigil to follow at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be at 11 AM, on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Old High School Gymnasium in Sundance. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Joseph's Children's Home in Torrington, WY.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com
