Obituary

Jean (Helmer) Yelley, 80 of Deadwood, SD, passed away on Sunday, February 20th, 2011.

She was born on February 5th, 1931 in Belle Fourche, SD to Harry and Hazel (Widdoss) Helmer. She was the eighth of nine children.

She attended elementary school in Spearfish and graduated from Lead High School in 1948. She was a track star, taught swimming lessons, worked as an usher and cleaned at the Homestake Opera House.

She married Malcolm Yelley on September 17th, 1949. She worked at Dunn's Pharmacy in Lead for nine years until her daughter, Connie was born. At which time she became a devoted mother and homemaker.

Many may remember in February, 1992 she won $214,000 at the Old Style playing a slot machine on eight quarters. She continued to share the wealth for many years following her big win.

Jean was a "baby magnet", a wonderful cook, and had love for everyone.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie Yelley, grandson Keith Melcher, brother Jack Helmer (Sue), sisters Dixie Grantz (Dan), Norma Larson, Gladys Everhard (Don) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Doris Ogilvie, Helen Helmer and Charlotte Nangle, brother Harry Helmer, and husband MalcolmYelley.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established for the Twin City Animal Shelter.
