Obituary

Jean Patricia Matson, Spearfish, SD
Our beloved Grams passed away November 5, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family after having a massive stroke.

Jean Patricia Matson was born September 16th 1927 in Buffalo, SD to Claude and Inez Olson. She spent most of her life In Harding County. During her school years growing up she lived with her Uncle John and Aunt Alice and her cousin, Betty Jo. Betty Jo was like a sister to her then, and a sister and best friend to her today. In 1948, Jean married her long time love, Charles Matson. This 60 year union was blessed with three children, Terry, Claudia and Sandy. From 1948-1961 she was the secretary for the Matson truck line. In 1961 the family moved to the Olson Ranch, this is when Jean began teaching at the country school. She had six students; three of them were her own children. In 1968 they purchased the leather store in Buffalo, SD and operated the store until 1976. After this Jean became very busy teaching her grandchildren how to fish, ride bikes, and how to drive. Chuck and Jean moved to Spearfish in 1997 and enjoyed their retirement.

Jean was a woman of many talents and an excellent teacher. Rarely could you go to her home and not find her sitting at her sewing machine, or sitting on the couch with a crochet needle and yarn. She was an excellent seamstress doing alterations for many friends, family and various businesses. She could alter or create anything, but, she was most known for her towel jackets. She was an avid quilter, making quilts for all the children in her life and for donations. Her great-granddaughters are very blessed to have had the privilege of her teaching them to sew and crochet.

Grams' greatest joys in life were spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her morning visits with Donna, cards at the Senior Center and anytime she could find a nine cent machine in Deadwood.

Grams will be greatly missed.

Jean is survived by her sons, Terry (Terryl) Matson, Spearfish, SD, Sandy Matson, Reva, SD, and daughter Claudia Vroman, Buffalo, SD. Grandchildren; Terra (John) Shaffner, Terree (Alan) Matson-McCoy, Taylor Vroman, and Ryan (Kelcee) Vroman, great grandchildren; Kelyn, Karlee, Saidee, Sidnee, Silvee, Jace and Mollee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, two brothers, John R. and Sam Olson, and son-in-law, Larry Vroman.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. A memorial has been established to benefit Hospice of the Northern Hills.
