Jason Michael Rantapaa, age 50, passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2026. Those who knew him will remember his laughter, his competitive spirit, and the deep love he had for his family.
Born on August 7, 1975, to Mike and Deana Rantapaa, Jason grew up in Lead and Deadwood, where he became a familiar and well-loved presence in the small-town community that shaped him. Known for his competitive spirit, athletic ability, and easygoing personality, he graduated from Lead High School in 1994 and carried his love of sports, humor, and connection with others throughout his life.
Growing up in the Black Hills meant deep roots and lifelong bonds. Jason remained close to his extended family, especially his uncles Kurt and Mark Rantapaa, whose steady presence and guidance meant a great deal to him over the years. He also shared a lifelong connection with his sisters built on shared memories, loyalty, and laughter.
In 2007, Jason’s life changed forever with the birth of his daughter, Sophie Layne Rantapaa. Becoming her dad was one of his greatest joys, and he was deeply proud of the young woman she became.
Determined to build a strong future for his family, Jason returned to school and earned his degree in Mining Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 2014. He later worked at the Sanford Underground Research Facility with Kiewit Construction, grateful to build his career in the Black Hills he loved.
In 2015, Jason married Patti Devin Peay, beginning a marriage rooted in partnership, resilience, laughter, and deep love. Together they built a strong blended family and a life full of shared dreams. Jason embraced his role as a stepfather to Ayden and Brandon Peay, supporting them as they stepped into adulthood and celebrating their accomplishments. Becoming “Po” to his grandchildren, Charlie and Tony Peay, brought him immense joy, and he adored his grandbabies.
Jason loved a good challenge and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed watching his kids compete in sports, golfing with them, playing board games, and even the occasional round of Pokémon Go or Clash of Clans. In recent years he also found joy in woodworking and rock hunting, always eager to share his latest project or find with friends and family.
Jason was kind, big-hearted, and fiercely competitive, with a quick wit and a laugh that people will never forget. In a small town where everyone knows everyone, Jason was known — and he was loved.
He is survived by his wife, Patti Rantapaa; his daughter, Sophie Layne Rantapaa; his stepsons, Ayden (Rose) Peay and Brandon Peay; his grandchildren, Charlie and Tony Peay; his mother and stepfather, Deana and Erv Heck; his sisters, Brooke (Todd) Maddox, Brianne Alley, Brittany (Jeremy) Williams, Megan (Sam) Berkeland, and Molly (Troy) Vanni; his brother-in-law, Mikey (Machel) Devin; his sister-in-law, Alicia (John) Rice; grandfather, Floyd Dahl; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mike Rantapaa; his grandparents; Sharon and Russel Rantapaa, Sharon Dahl; his mother-in-law, Linda Devin; and his uncles, Mike and Alec Dahl.
Jason will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for how he made people feel — welcomed, included, and valued. His laughter, stories, and steady presence will be deeply missed, but the love he shared with family and friends will live on.
