Obituary

Janice Roth, 58 of Spearfish, died on September 15, 2013 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Janice was born in Aberdeen, SD, the fourth of six children of Bob and Enid Roth. She grew up in several towns in South Dakota and Wisconsin while her parents pursued the Methodist ministry. Jan graduated from Belle Fourche HS and Black Hills State University. She returned to Belle Fourche to teach but, longing to travel, applied to the American overseas schools (DoDEA) where she taught in Germany for 30 years at Vogelweh and Ramstein military bases. She also completed a Master's Degree while overseas. In Jan's chosen life, she was able to do so much that fed her spirit: teaching, traveling, hiking, skiing, cooking, gardening, and photography. She also especially enjoyed singing with her Sweet Adelines Quartet where she made many international and lifelong friends. Jan retired and returned to the Black Hills to be close to her family here. Jan lived until she died, and her strength, optimistic outlook, and beautiful smile will be remembered and missed on both sides of the oceans. She passed away after a five-year battle with cancer.

Janice is survived by her partner, Dr. Jo Powell of Spearfish; her parents Bob and Enid Roth; brother Tom Roth; brother Jerry and wife Kay Roth; sister Joanne and husband Rex Vigoren; brother Ron Roth; sister Cheryl and husband James Honomichl; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

A celebration service is being held at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis, Sept. 28 at 11 am. In her honor, a memorial bench will be placed in one the Spearfish city parks.

Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
