Jane Katherine (Holmlund) Carlstrom, 99, a longtime resident of Spearfish, SD passed away on February 12, 2024.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Jane was born July 16, 1924, in Minneapolis, MN to Marvin and Lydia (Jatko) Holmlund. The family moved to South Dakota, where she attended school in Nemo, before graduating from Spearfish High School in 1942, and then attended Black Hills Teachers College.

She married William (Bill) Andrew Carlstrom on April 4, 1943, and had six children, twelve grandchildren (all of whom were her "favorite"), eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She and Bill were married for 61 years and operated a Grade A dairy for 43 years. She continued living on the farm until a recent hospitalization.

Jane has been described as a "community icon." She worked at the telephone company, extension office, and a dentist's office, before working at the Queen City Mail, later Black Hills Pioneer, for over seventy years. She retired at the age of 95. She volunteered as a 4H Leader, in the American Cancer Society, and the Heritage Center. She was also active in Extension Club, Mothers Club, Republican Women, and the United Methodist Church, all while working alongside her husband on the family dairy farm.

She enjoyed her family, sewing, quilting, crocheting, and knitting, and touched numerous lives with her kind, compassionate manner, and avid interest in others. She visited 48 states and was rarely still unless reading or watching Jeopardy.

Surviving family includes two sons, Robert (Carmen) Carlstrom, Colorado Springs, CO, and Richard (Gwen) Carlstrom, Spearfish; four daughters, Linda Benning, Arlington, VA, Dee (Steve) Riss, Custer, SD, Arla (Bob) Larson, Spearfish, and Lana (Brad) Williams, Colorado Springs, CO; 11 grandchildren, Belinda Coulter, Chris Carlstrom, Brian Carlstrom, Keith Riss, Justin Riss, Wendy Crooks, Nick Larson, Melissa Currier, Trisha Marx, Brandon Williams, and Jordan Williams; and two brothers Bruce Holmlund, Delta, CO, and Jerry Holmlund, Rancho Mirage, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, parents, Marvin and Lydia Holmlund, and grandson, Scott Benning.
