Jan Walker 80 of Spearfish, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2017 surrounded by her beloved siblings Ruth, Sharon and Ward.
Jan was born August 18, 1936 in Rapid City, daughter of Jack and Virginia Beaird. She was raised in Vale, SD by her Mom and Stepfather "Daddy Chan" Williamson. She married Jim Smith in 1954 and had 4 children; Kathy (Mark), Donna (Doyle), and Patti (Rob) son, David deceased at age 5. She has seven grandchildren: Corey, Michelle, Jason, Lezlee, Michael, Tyler and Lucas. She also has four great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jan has had a variety of occupations starting out as a dental assistant, working for Boeing in Rapid City and New Orleans, LA, technical writer in the Aerospace program at Cape Canaveral during the Gemini and Apollo production, and employment office manager in Pomona, CA.
In 1974, Jan and her husband Ron returned to South Dakota and were owners of the Unique Boutique gift store in Spearfish, and of Walker's Veteran's home in Spearfish until her retirement in 2006.
In her "spare" time, she was very active in Women's Auxiliary at VFW, becoming secretary, treasurer, local president and serving as State President in 1984.
She was a great cook, enjoying Gourmet cooking the most. She loved to read, travel, visit with family and friends and take daily walks in the Spearfish Park.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A Celebration Picnic will be held from 12:30-2:00 PM at the Spearfish Park following the burial. A memorial has been established in her name to the VFW Auxiliary in Spearfish and would be a special honor in her memory.
