James "Jim" Voorhees, Jr. 85 of Spearfish passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Sturgis Long Term Care after a lengthy illness.
Jim was born on January 10, 1934 at Sturgis, SD to James and Bertha Voorhees. Jim grew up on a dairy farm east of Spearfish and attended Spearfish School, graduating in 1952. He participated in sports and lettered in football.
Jim married his high school sweetheart Myrtle "Myrt" Moses on August 31, 1952 in Spearfish and they continued to live there the rest of their lives. Jim worked for Gate City Dairy as a milk delivery man until purchasing Spearfish Bookstore and later Business Systems. Following retirement, he and Myrt volunteered for Hospice and Meals on Wheels.
Jim was active in the Lions Club, Jaycees and the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department. He served as a Spearfish City Council member, the Lawrence County Planning and Zoning Committee as well as the airport board. He and others business member were involved in the community group that worked to bring a dream of a reality of Spearfish having a hospital-the building of Lookout Memorial Hospital. He loved to play golf and looked forward to Wednesday "Men's Night". He was proud of the accomplishment of obtaining a pilot's license as well as being ordained a Deacon of the Episcopal Church.
He is survived by daughters, Autumn Gregory, Rapid City and D'Anna Hitson, Spearfish; son, Marc (Cari) Voorhees, Spearfish; granddaughters, Heather Hitson, Los Angeles, CA, Sara Gregory, Rapid City, grandson, Seth Voorhees, Rapid City; great-grandson, Easton Gregory, Rapid City, brother-in-law, Maurice Moses, Belle Fourche and special friend, Tom Nelson. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Myrt; son, James "Jimmy" Voorhees; parents, James and Bertha Voorhees and sister, Janice.
Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, May 10, 2019 at All Angels Episcopal Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the scholarship fund for Thunderhead Episcopal Church Camp.
