Obituary

James "Joe" Smythe, 75 of Pine Haven, WY died Friday, January 17, 2009 at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Vigil services will be held at 7:00P.M., Sunday, January 18, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Moorcroft, WY.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 P.M., Monday, January 19, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Kerry Prendiville as Celebrant. Burial will follow at the Moorcroft Cemetery.

James Joseph "Joe" Smythe son of Richard and Leona Smythe, was born December 21, 1933 in Rock Rapids, IA. He lived and received his education in Rock Rapids and in his twelve years of education never missed a day of school. Joe entered the Navy in September 1952 and was honorably discharged on June 11, 1960.

Joe was united in marriage with Shirley Mae Torgerson on February 2, 1957 on the family farm in Lake Preston, SD. The couple lived and raised their children in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming. Joe was employed as a sheet metal worker and retired in 1995.

Joe enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and golfing. He enjoyed woodworking and most of his projects were donated to charities. He volunteered for the senior citizens center in Moorcroft, WY. He was an active member of the square dancing clubs in Moorcroft WY and Spearfish SD. He liked socializing with his friends and family. Above all Joe cherished spending time with his family and was particularly proud of his children, grandchildren and dogs. Joe will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Grateful for having shared his life are his four children, James Wade Smythe and his wife Laura of Sioux Falls SD, Dawn Renae Thomas and her husband Greg of Sioux Falls SD, Todd Allen Smythe and his wife Schlee of Moorcroft WY, Tami Teresa Ragels and her husband Kelly of Spearfish SD, eight grandchildren; Miles Smythe (Kerrie), Tanya Smythe, Christine Winrow (Cody), Ashley Thomas, Sean Ukele (Britani), Kristin Ukele, Tia Ragels, and Jair Ragels, one great-grandchild, Peyton Smythe, three brothers; Ted Smythe, Tom Smythe, and Dave Smythe and one sister Wava Zoet, also host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Shirley, three brothers and a sister.
