Obituary

James "Jim" Shrader, 87 of Spearfish passed away on January 16, 2019 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Jim was born on October 10, 1931 in Santa Monica, CA to Clifford and Hazel (McDermaid) Shrader.

In 1932, the young family moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he grew up, attended school and lived until 1967. Jim joined the South Dakota National Guard, 147 th Field Artillery Battalion in 1948 and served six years including two years full time activation during the Korean War.

Jim was married to Barbara Jessop in New York City on May 7, 1954. To this union two children were born, Michael James and Robert Lee.

Jim served a five-year apprenticeship in order to become a licensed journeyman plumber/steamfitter. In 1960, he was elected Business Manager/Financial Secretary of the Plumbers and Steamfitter local union 587, a job he held until 1967. While living in Sioux Falls, Jim was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks, Eagles and served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Sioux Falls.

In 1967, Jim was appointed to his "dream job", a South Dakota State Trooper. Jim and his family were stationed over the next several years in Philip, Pierre, Spearfish and Buffalo, South Dakota. They made many lasting friends while on this journey and are in contact with many of them to this day. When Jim retired from the Highway Patrol, he worked as a fulltime bus driver for Jackrabbit Lines of Sioux Falls and drove all over the United States and Canada. Later he drove part time for Dakota Bus of Spearfish.

Jim was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Whitewood, having served as an elder and a deacon. He was also active in the Wesley Methodist Church while living in Sioux Falls and the Methodist Church in Philip and most recently the United Church of Christ in Spearfish.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Spearfish; son, Robert Shrader of Spearfish; two brothers, Melvin (Dotty) of Mesa, AZ and Jerry (Patricia) of Dallas, OR; grandson, Zachary Shrader of Bemidji, MN; daughter-in-law, Lynette Thom and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; and brother, Clifford R. Shrader.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, SD. Funeral services will be held at United Church of Christ in Spearfish on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 11:30 AM. with burial following the service at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 1:30 PM. The South Dakota Highway Patrol Honor Guard detail will render honors with full military honors provided by the US Army and Spearfish Honor Guard.

A memorial has been established for the South Dakota Make-A-Wish Foundation and Spearfish United Church of Christ.
