Obituary

James (Jim) Richard McGilvrey, 86 of Spearfish, SD went to rest with the Lord on Saturday July 6 th , 2019.

Jim was born on August 18 th , 1932 in Onida, SD to James Reuben and Petranella (Nellie) Elizabeth Anastatia McGilvrey. Jim grew up in Bemidji, Minnesota with his five brothers and five sisters. He met the love of his life, Shirley Mae Westphal, while living in South Dakota and the two were married on June 8 th , 1952 in Gettysburg. Jim worked jobs in almost every field imaginable. He was a real handyman and towards the end of his career he owned his own company, McGilvrey Landscaping. Jim and Shirley lived in many different places throughout their lives including Minnesota, Montana, Illinois, California and of course South Dakota, where they eventually retired.

Jim was a peaceful man and a loving father. Some of his favorite things to do included traveling the world with his beautiful bride, spending quality time with his friends and family, and of course watching football every Sunday.

Jim is survived by his wife, Shirley McGilvrey (Westphal); children, Steven (Susan) McGilvrey, James (Nancy) McGilvrey, Stacy (Lisa) McGilvrey, and Shirleen Thomas; grandchildren, Jill (Vern) Jefferson, Stephanie Lansing, Anthony McGilvrey, Joe (Angie) McGilvrey, James (Denise) McGilvrey, Kyle Mitchell, John (Stefanie) Agens, Brianna (Michael) Schmidt, Jennifer (Brian) Jensen, and Charles Thomas; great-grandchildren Jena McGilvrey, Bailey Braze, JT McGilvrey, Cole McGilvrey, Kaidyn Agens, Kalina Mill, Lilianna Schmidt, Michelle Schmidt, Angelina Schmidt, and Perona Jensen; and his sister Jeannine Crandall. He is proceeded in death by his parents James and Nellie McGilvrey; his siblings, Dorothy, Ethel, Hollice, Bernadette, Clarence, Otto, Howard, Kenneth, and Alice; and his daughters Jodeen Boros and Sharlett McGilvrey.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the American Lung Association.
