James Hans “Jim” Hoff, 79, of Rapid City, went to be with his Lord September 22, 2027. Jim was born August 30, 1947, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Edwin “Doc” Henry and Esther Margaret (Bertelsen) Hoff. He spent his early years in Rapid City. Jim went on to attend Dakota Wesleyan University, where he pursued his passion for education and graduated with the class of 1970.

In 1971, while working at a German restaurant, Jim met Miriam Grace “Mim” Hoff, the love of his life. They were married at Placerville Church Camp on July 15, 1972. Together they built a life centered around family, education, faith, community, and the many friendships they made along the way.

Jim began his teaching career in Douglas, before he and Miriam continued their lives as educators in Bison, South Dakota. The following year, they moved to Ellingson School in the Northwest District, where they taught in a one-room school for two years. With the arrival of their son, Christopher, Jim and Miriam moved to Lead, South Dakota, where Jim continued his teaching career. Jim later taught at Deadwood Middle School and Elementary School, where he devoted many years to his students and the community.

Jim was a charismatic, fun, and loving person who had a special ability to make people feel welcome. He was loving across all generations and cherished his family, especially his son, Chris, his daughter-in-law, Jo, and his grandchildren, Connor and Brynna “Maire”.

Jim had many interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He was involved in theater both as an actor and as a patron of the arts. He enjoyed playing bridge socially and especially loved teaching the game to others. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Deadwood. Faith and service were important parts of Jim's life. He was active in Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead, Canyon Lake Methodist Church in Rapid City, and Spearfish United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Through his churches, community activities, and friendships, Jim touched the lives of many people.

He will be deeply missed by his son, Christopher (Jo) Hoff; beloved grandchildren, Connor and Brynna “Maire”; siblings Kay (Marvin) Paschke; Tyler (Bob Firestone) Hoff; sister-in-law, Joyce (Dale) Bruce; and many extended family members and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Miriam Grace “Mim” Hoff; his parents, Edwin “Doc” Henry Hoff and Esther Margaret Hoff.

A memorial has been established to benefit United Methodist Camping.

Visitation will be held the night prior to the service from 4:00PM – 6:00PM at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Services will be held at 11:00AM Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead. Burial will follow the service at 1:00PM at West Lead Masonic Cemetery.
