James "Jim" William Furrow, longtime Spearfish resident passed away at his home on August 16, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 30, 1924 in Farmingdale, SD to George and Hazel Furrow, the 2
nd
of four children. He was raised on a farm in the New Underwood area and graduated from High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy from 1944-46 on the U.S.S. New Kent. He was a proud WW ll veteran.
Jim married Virginia (Ginny) Kirkpatrick February 29, 1948 in Rapid City. He attended BHTC to study industrial arts on the GI Bill. He started his career in construction and later formed Furrow Construction. In the 1950's he built and operated the Sherwood Lodge. In 1962 the family moved to Ft. Collins, CO where he purchased the A-Z Rental business and operated it until 1970. They returned to their hometown of Spearfish and started a new business, Tour Ice. He continued to build homes throughout his lifetime, always available to help anyone that needed his carpentry skills. This included homes and remodels from Alaska to Texas. In Spearfish he built over 50 homes, and as he always said, "Enjoyed going to work every day!"
He is survived by his wife, Ginny of 70 years, a son Ron (Barb) Furrow of Aurora, CO, and 2 daughters, Susan Nagel and Terri Bjorum both of Spearfish, SD. He was blessed with eight grandsons, Nevada, Cheyenne, Colter, and Hunter Furrow, Brad and Todd Nagel, Matt and Marshall Bjorum. He had 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert Furrow of Spearfish and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Florabelle Powell and brother Harold Furrow.
Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church, retiree from the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department, lifetime member of the V.F.W., Spearfish Masonic Lodge, and a 32
nd
Degree Mason.
Jim loved to fish and made many trips to Alaska to halibut and salmon fish. One of his favorite local spots was Iron Creek Lake, where he "always caught the most and the biggest fish". He and Ginny spent many years enjoying golfing, snowmobiling, dancing and traveling in their RV. He will be missed by his family and friends and always remembered for his strong character and integrity.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM with the Funeral Service to follow at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
