James "Jimmie" I. Clark, 98 of Lead, SD passed away on December 5, 2016 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in rural Lawrence County on June 13, 1918 to Horace and Clara (Mayer) Clark. Jimmie graduated from Lead High School.
Shortly after graduation he joined the US Army where he served with the 109th Engineers, during World War II, seeing action in North Africa and Italy. Prior to his discharge he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
While in Fort Leonard Wood, Jimmie married his sweetheart, Martha K. Harris on January 26, 1945. They came back to Sturgis where he worked at Fort Meade Hospital. They moved to Lead when daughter Colleen was born. He worked at the Kirk Power Plant, transferring to Homestake to the Vent Shop working as a welder for years. Later he transferred to the Homestake Hospital Maintenance Department, until his retirement in 1983.
Jimmie enjoyed his trips to the grocery store, bank, eye doctor and clinic talking with the local residents and visitors to the area. His knowledge of Lead and the history of the Homestake Gold Mine was amazing.
Jimmie is survived by his daughters, Colleen (Larry) Pierce of Deadwood and Kathie (Steve) Lawrence of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, James (Jessica) Pierce, Deadwood, Clancey Dillman-Pullen, Spearfish and Aaron (Julie) Lawrence, Los Angeles; great-grandchildren, Harrison Pierce, Sturgis, Kadden and Kaston Dillman, Kingston and Kelton Pullen, Spearfish and Maya and Gabrielle Lawrence. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; great-granddaughter, Kendalyn Pullen and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Graveside services will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 2:00 PM on May 12, 2017. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to benefit the Wounded Warriors or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, and may be sent to Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel , James Clark Memorial , PO Box 487, Spearfish, SD 57783.
