Obituary

James C. Chandler, 82, Spearfish, SD died Sunday, September 6, 2015 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

James was born in Lead on June 10, 1933, to Nephi and Helen (Ferguson) Chrisman at the home of his beloved grandparents, Fred and Ethel Ferguson. When James was very young his father passed away and James Chandler later became his stepfather.

He lived with his parents in Jasper, AL, Butte, MT and Spearfish, SD. In 1950, he joined the National Guard 196 R.C.T. Med. Co. in Belle Fourche later being called to active duty during the Korean War, where he served until 1952. After returning to the USA, he was stationed at Fort Sill, OK, Fort Carson, CO and Germany from 1952 to 1955. He retired from the Army after 22 years.

In 1951, he met Helen Dewald and they were married for 62 years. After retiring he attended Black Hills State University, graduating with a B.S. in Elementary Special Education and Geography.

Survivors include his wife, Helen, Spearfish; sons, Steve, Lead and John (Hayley) Boulder, CO and three grandchildren, which were his pride and joy, Fisher James, Maxwell Leed and Jocelyn Wren.

Graveside services will be at 11 AM on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Spearfish Honor Guard.
