Jack Thomas Vosler passed away at his Spearfish home on April 7, 2018.
Jack was born on October 23, 1923 to George and Alice Vosler in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He was the youngest of 4 boys. The family moved to Minneapolis where Jack graduated from North High School in 1941.
In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a Radio Operator and Gunner in a B-25. Jack fought in North Africa and Italy. He was wounded and contracted malaria. When the war ended, Jack attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN for one and a half years and then transferred to the University of Minnesota. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1950 and was a member of Chi Epsilon, honor Engineering Society.
While at St. Olaf he met his wife, Ruth Dove, and they married September 10

, 1949. They had three sons, Steven, Robert and John. Jack was an engineer for Standard Oil in Minneapolis. In 1959 they moved to Huron, SD where Jack opened up a consulting engineering office. Jack was active in his church, the Masonic Lodge, James Valley Shrine, and Rotary. Jack and Ruth moved back to Minneapolis in 1980 and Jack became president of Schoell & Madson, consulting Engineers in Minnetonka. Prior to retirement, Jack built their cabin on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood, MN where he greatly enjoyed spending his summers with family and friends. In 1989 they retired to Spearfish, SD to be closer to children and grandchildren.
Jack grew up playing hockey and baseball for his high school and college teams. He was instrumental in starting youth hockey in South Dakota, was the first president of the State Hockey Association and is a member of the Huron Hockey Hall of Fame, in 1980 he received an award as the father of SD amateur hockey.
Jack was an avid skier, duck hunter, and golfer. Jack was a private pilot, rebuilding and flying his own airplane, and building his own navigational radios. Jack loved sailing and built and raced his own sailboat. In his later years he enjoyed making wine and constructing golf clubs. Most of all, Jack was a family man.
He was preceded in death by his son, John; parents; three brothers, Robert, Alden and Bill. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Ruth; sons, Steven (Anne) and Robert (Sara); five grandchildren Jackie, Halie, Carey, Sam and Logan; a great-grandson and granddaughter and numerous family and friends.
Jack made the world a better place. Even when terribly ill, he asked about the welfare and well being of family and friends. Most of all he was devoted to and loved Ruth, his wife of 68 years. His face would light up into a smile when she sat beside him in his last days.
Memorial services will be held Monday, April 16
th
at 1:30 pm at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish. in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Spearfish Food Pantry or the Good Shepherd Clinic.
