Obituary

Jack Eugene Sigman, 86 of Spearfish, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 13, 2020.

Jack was born October 9, 1933, in Belle Fourche, SD to John and Tillie (Vodnanski) Sigman. He often spoke about the fun times and adventures he had growing up in a small town. Jack graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1950.

Jack enlisted in the navy at age 17. He served on a destroyer ship in the Korean War as a sonar man. He was proud and humbled to serve his country. Jack met his wife of 60 years, Beatrice A. Reed in 1955, and they married in 1959. Jack and Bea raised their two children, Steven and Dianna, in southern California; always with the dream of returning to South Dakota. He was a dedicated employee for AT&T, Pacific Bell for 30 years. He started his career as a cable splicer and was able to retire as an engineer at age 52.

Jack and Bea were then able to live their dream of returning to South Dakota to build a log home in the forested hills of Spearfish.

Jack had many hobbies. He enjoyed wood working, crafting many beautiful pieces. Jack would spend hours in his beloved garden. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and fishing with his family. Jack rebuilt a truck, well after turning 80 years old. Jack was a smart, kind, fun loving, spirited man with a quick wit. He was an incredible flirt. He loved his family fiercely and let them know it at every opportunity. Jack loved and pampered his wife. He was an amazing father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be incredibly missed but will live on in the valuable life lessons he has passed on. His guidelines were: be safe, try to be smart about what you are doing, be kind, always have fun, and, it doesn't all have to be done right now.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Beatrice; son, Steven Sigman of Spearfish; daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Michael Monahan of Spearfish; sister, Mary Lou Elliot of Oceanside California; grandsons, Daniel (Kara) Burg, Kyle (Alicia) Burg, and Jack Sigman; granddaughter, Joy (Benjamin) Norlin; step-granddaughter, Caitlin Monahan; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Brenna, Ayvree, Lyla, Alex, Ashtyn, and Alayna; nieces, Camille and Nicole Long; and nephews, Sheldon Long and Jeff Elliott.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Tillie Sigman; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Ed Knocke; and brother-in-law, Donald Elliott.

The family is eternally grateful for the support, care, and services provided by the Black Hills VA and Monument Health and Home Hospice.
