Ivan Frank Policky, 79, of Sundance, Wyoming, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2026
Ivan was born June, 23 1947, to Anton (Andy) & Frances Policky. The family owned and operated Crook County Refinery company. Ivan was raised to shepherd animals, serve locals at the station, and discovered a lifelong fascination with being behind a steering wheel, particularly Fords.
After graduating Sundance High school, Ivan spent a few years at the University of Wyoming collecting, fixing, and flipping a variety of vehicles and discovering life as an independent. None of these activities progressed his higher education. He was then drafted for the Vietnam war effort. Ivan served in the United States Army as a generator mechanic in Germany.
After the Military, Ivan had a calling for the sea and hitch hiked to South Carolina and joined the “Stardust” crew. Countless adventures eventually led back to Sundance where he purchased the Napa stores in Sundance and Wright, and partnered ownership with Sundance Equipment (John Deere). Other entrepreneur paths included logging, custom farming, and engine building filled his life as well.
A foundation since 1963, the ranch on Inyan Kara Creek had always pulled the hardest. After his father’s passing in the 70’s Ivan stewarded the ranch for over 50 years. Through the years he expanded its borders, tilled the land, and ran the ranch with precision. He took the roll of managing land that would outlast him and continue in perpetuity very seriously. Wyoming has no average so capitalizing on abundant years and praying for the best perspective on the dire years was essential. To quote a saying he used frequently “Without vision the people perish”. His mentorship will be his legacy.
Ivan is survived by his daughter Tess, sons Chris & Ian, and granddaughter Eo. Ivan was preceded in death by his father Andy, mother Frances, brothers Robert & Don, sister Troyce Turner.
Burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish, SD at 9:00am Saturday, September 12, 2026. Followed by a celebration of life at the Policky Ranch located 227 Inyan Kara Creek Rd, Upton WY 82730 @ 1:00pm. All family and friends are welcome to attend.
