Ivan Charles
Hovland
March 22, 1937 – April 29, 2026
Ivan Hovland, age 89, of Spearfish, SD, passed away on April 28th at his residence at Edgewood Assisted Living.
Born March 22, 1937, in Rapid City, SD, Ivan was the son of John and Emma Hovland. He spent his early years in Nemo and Lead, SD, graduating from Lead High School in 1955. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education as part of the final graduating class of Springfield University in Springfield, SD.
On September 21, 1957, Ivan married Alvina Fleck. Together, they raised two sons, Charles and Steven, and shared 68 years of marriage.
Ivan joined the National Guard in 1954 and spent 20 years serving his country. Ivan taught machine shop at Lead High School for 30 years, preparing numerous students for careers in machine tool technology, many of whom transitioned to technical positions at Homestake Mining Company and other major employers. He also served as the Vocational Director for Lead High School. Known for his dedication and high standards, Ivan emphasized safety and respect for machinery, earning the admiration and affection of his students.
He had a deep passion for antique firearms, military memorabilia, and firearm restoration. Two of his notable projects included restoring Wild Bill Hickock’s matching revolvers and Sharps rifles from the buffalo era.
Following his retirement from teaching, Ivan continued working on guns and he and Alvina contributed countless volunteer hours at the Adam’s Museum in Deadwood, SD. Ivan’s extensive historical knowledge also led to active involvement in the Lawrence County Historical Society. He enjoyed working on the family ranch near Nemo and frequently assisted his children with various projects.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Alvina; his sons, Charles and Steven (Michelle); grandchildren, Nikayla Barnes (Matt) and Jon Hovland (Cody Halle); great-grandchildren, Jackson and Taylor Barnes and nephew, Mitchell Hovland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Hovland, his brother, Dale and nephew, Michael.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, June 1, 2026 at St Patrick Catholic Church in Lead. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
