Obituary

Ivan Goetz, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and 'Papa to all' passed away on June 17th, 2025, surrounded by family and love. Ivan's life was defined by his deep love for his family, his generous heart, and his unwavering commitment to those around him.

Born and raised on a farm in Selby, South Dakota, Ivan was one of eight siblings in a close-knit, hardworking family. He carried those values into every chapter of his life. For over 23 years, he worked as a gold miner at Homestake Gold Mine—some of that time alongside his brothers. The friendships he built there stood the test of time and distance, lasting his whole life.

In 1978, Ivan married the love of his life, Shelly Fiedler. Together, they moved to Spearfish, SD, where they built a home and raised their three children: Galen, Jillian, and Levi—each of whom carry forward his strength, kindness, and sense of humor.

After retirement, Ivan never slowed down. He became a self-taught carpenter, plumber, electrician, and all-around jack-of-all-trades—often seen helping friends, family, or neighbors with whatever needed building or fixing. He never met a stranger and was always the first to offer a hand, a tool, or a smile.

Ivan's greatest joy came later, being "Papa" to his grandchildren. His love for Annika, Liam, Hadleigh, and Charleigh knew no bounds. Whether he was building something for them, taking them on adventures, or simply making them laugh, his presence was a gift they'll never forget.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Esther Goetz. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Shelly; his children Galen (Bobbie) Goetz, Jillian (Adam) Phillips, and Levi Goetz; and his treasured grandchildren Annika and Liam Goetz, and Hadleigh and Charleigh Phillips. He also leaves behind many siblings, extended family, and lifelong friends who will miss him dearly.

A man of few words and deep kindness, he will be remembered most for the way he showed up—for his family, his friends, and his community.

Services will be held at 1:00PM Friday, June 27th, 2025, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, SD.
