Jean was born January 11, 1929, in Faith, SD, to Lee and Lula Crane. The family moved to Spearfish seven years later. She loved school, and after attaining her teaching certificate at Black Hills Teachers College, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse for a year. During that time she met a handsome young man just out of the Navy by the name of Stanley Somers. The couple wed on June 6, 1948. Stan and Jean had two children, Jerry and Vickie and were married over 65 years. Jean and Stan lived in many parts of the country throughout their marriage, from Alaska to Texas, Colorado, Michigan, and of course South Dakota. While in Michigan, Jean fulfilled a life-long dream and became a beautician. She had beauty shops in two of her homes, but her scissors and perm rods were with her whenever she traveled and helped out anyone who needed a fresh "do."
Jean loved people. It was joy to her to lend a hand, cook a meal, help paint a room—or give a fresh perm—to anyone who needed a little lift. She loved her sisters in Beta Sigma Phi, of which she was a member for over 40 years. "Red Hatters" gave her many light-hearted moments. She loved to paint with oils, sew, play piano and the accordion, and she loved GAMES! Card games, dice games, morning or late at night, Jean loved to gather a group around the table—kids, teens, old folks—and "have a little game." And if a Scrabble board came out, you were in trouble! Jean loved life. She loved her family and cherished her friends. She was so grateful to God for the richness of the life He gave her. Jean leaves behind a legacy of a life well-lived.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, and husband, Stan. She is survived by a sister, Cora Palmer of Plains, KS; a son, Jerry Somers of Spearfish; a daughter, Vickie (Robert) Fenimore of Waverly, TN; three granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of treasured friends.
