Obituary

Ida Marie Lewis, 100, of Lead died peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center in Spearfish, SD.

Ida Marie Howey was born on December 11, 1913 in Belle Fourche, SD to Charles and Ida Mae (McCumsey) Howey. She was raised with her five younger siblings on the family homestead along Thompson Creek in Carter County, MT. She attended school in Alzada, MT.

Marie became the wife of Dale W. Lewis on September 18, 1932, in Belle Fourche. They made their first home in Lead, relocating for several years to the Missoula, MT area before returning to Lead in 1949. Marie moved to Spearfish in 1989 where she spent the remainder of her life enjoying being in an area that was more reminiscent of the prairie of her childhood years.

Marie was a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved all forms of needlework. She derived much pleasure from reading, tending her lawn and flowerbeds, and gardening when space was available. Marie was a member of the Berean Baptist Church of Lead where she taught the kindergarten Sunday school class for many years.

Marie is survived by her daughter Sherry Toms Schopen and husband James Schopen, grandsons Ted Manley, James Manley, Matthew Manley, Darren Manley, Stephen Lewis, Robert Toms and Steven Toms, and granddaughter Leila Robins, as well as numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Sharon Lewis and son-in-law Willis Manley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Lewis, an infant son Gherald, son Gayland D. Lewis, daughter Margaret Manley, grandsons John Manley and Jon Toms, and son-in-law Frank Toms.

Private family services will be held with inurnment to take place at Mt. Lawn Cemetery in Lead.

Arrangements are under the care of the Lead-Deadwood Memorial Chapel in Lead
