Howard Dean Jacobs, 86 of Spearfish, SD, passed away on November 17, 2019, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Howard was born on October 10, 1933, in Corsica, SD, to John and Lena (Hemeyer) Jacobs. Shortly thereafter they moved to a farm 3 miles NW of Stickney, SD. He attended Pleasant Lake Consolidated School, then graduated from Stickney High School. Howard entered the United States Navy after high school and served four years, from 1953 to 1957 when he was honorably discharged.

On August 11, 1958, Howard married Vivian Bradwisch in White Lake, South Dakota. To this union, two children were born, Curtis and Dawn.

Howard worked at Lien Furniture in Stickney. In 1969, they moved their family to Atwater, MN where Howard worked as a foreman in a golf cart factory in Willmar. In 1974, they moved to Spearfish, SD where Howard worked for Garhart and Sons Logging Company of Whitewood. After the business closed in 1988, he worked in various construction jobs. He retired for the first time in 1995. To keep himself busy he went to work for the city of Spearfish rubble site for 20 years. Howard was inducted into the South Dakota Municipal Hall of Fame for his 20 years of service to the community of Spearfish. He then retired in 2016, for the final time.

In retirement, as throughout his entire life, he enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Howard is survived by his wife Vivian, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage in August 2019. He is also survived by his son, Curtis and his wife Lois; and daughter, Dawn and her husband Mike; grandchildren, Mark and Abby Jacobs, Kelsey Jacobs and boyfriend Cody Nilson, Alicia and Brad Kirksey, and Mandi and Orin Schulze; great-grandchildren, Wace and Jett Jacobs, and Hannah, Jaxon, and Levi Kirksey.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ron and Vernon; sister, Bernice; and beloved great-granddaughter, Jadyn Kirksey.

A memorial has been established to benefit the Children's Home Society of Rapid City.

A visitation will be held from 4:30 – 6:30 PM on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, SD. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at 2:00 PM at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
