Herbert Michel, 92, of Spearfish, SD passed away on Friday, December 13, 2019, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare in Spearfish, SD.

Herbert was born January 7, 1927 in West Germany a son of Alma Michel During World War II. Herbert met a young Romanian girl, Hulda Zehmer. who had been relocated there. Following a two-year courtship the couple were married on January 22, 1948. Herbert and Hulda moved to the United States in November of 1951, with the help of the Marshall Plan which helped relocate refugees from the war. Upon arrival in America the couple came to Nisland, SD, and shortly thereafter to Belle Fourche and later moved to Spearfish. While in Spearfish the couple purchased the Star Motel on 7 ^th and Elgin Street and a Mobile Service Station on Jackson and Main Street. Herbert and Hulda operated the motel until their retirement.

Grateful to have shared in his life are his two children; Else Kitzmiller (Stan Stroh) and Allen Michel all of Spearfish, grandson, Mike (Prudence) Kitzmiller; two great-granddaughters, Kassidy and Jordan Kitzmiller, his sister, Elsa Krause and his niece, Tanja (Lutz) Barnowski.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, December 20, 2019, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Home in Spearfish. Interment will follow in the family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
