IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Henry Mathew
Schumacher
September 14, 1935 – February 8, 2024
Henry Mathew Schumacher, 88, passed away at Oak Hill Hospital in Florida on February 8, 2024, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side.
Henry (Jr) was born on September 14, 1935, to Henry and Marie (Mayer) Schumacher in Mitchell, SD. He grew up in the Mt. Vernon area, farming with his family until they moved to the Black Hills in 1950, where his father worked for Homestake Gold Mine. He graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic School in Lead, SD, and after obtaining a teaching degree from Black Hills Teachers College, he coached basketball at St. Patrick's. Eventually, he worked at Homestake Gold Mine, retiring as a Shift Boss after 39 years of employment. He also retired after 29 years with the SD National Guard as a Staff Sergeant. He was instrumental in forming the Lead High School Booster Club and served as president. Additionally, he was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
He met Diana Dutton in Lead, SD, and they were married on June 10, 1961. They were blessed with two children, a son, Gregory Todd, and a daughter, Debra Renee. Henry and Diana raised the children in Lead and eventually moved to Spearfish. In February 2022, they moved to Springhill, Florida, to live with their daughter Debbie, her husband, Chris, and their son Matthew. The family enjoyed many adventures in Florida, exploring the beaches, with a highlight of watching the SpaceX launch at Cape Canaveral. Above all, Henry loved his family and cherished sharing and caring for each other. He was a man of deep, strong faith and helped countless people over the years, always willing to lend a hand. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making willow canes.
He is survived by his wife Diana; daughter, Debbie (Chris) Meehan; grandchildren, Blake (Amber) Schumacher, Cody (Lauren) Meehan, Miranda (Steven) Lane, Anna (Will) Roberts, and Matthew Meehan; nine great-grandchildren; and Greg's wife, Betty. He is also survived by his brothers, James, Paul, and Joe, and sisters, MaryAnn, Karen, Donna, Darlene, and Marlys, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
As the oldest of 13 children, Jr took his role as the leader of the pack with a quiet, yet firm touch. He was preceded in death by his parents; Diana's parents, Clarence and Margaret Dutton; his beloved son, Greg; brother, Dennis; sisters Janet, Rose, and a baby sister; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Barb and Mike Dropulich, Dennis and Charlotte Dutton.
Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Jr wished that donations be made to an autism charity.
Arrangements are in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish, SD. Online condolences may be written at www.fidler-isburgfuneralchapels.com.
