Helen Carole Chandler, 94, died on April 2nd 2026, in Spearfish.
Helen was born in Scotland, SD, to Rev. John and Hella (Guenthner) Dewald, on December 29, 1932. After graduating from Parkston High School, she attended Black Hills State College for two years and then taught at a country school in eastern South Dakota. When visiting relatives in Spearfish, she met her future husband, James Chandler, an Army Sergeant returning from Korea. They married on November 4, 1952. Jim, Helen, and their sons Steve (Lead, SD) and John (Boulder, CO) were stationed at several posts in the United States. They also spent two tours in Germany. After Jim retired from the Army, the family resided in Lead. Jim and Helen later spent winters in Arizona and Spearfish.
Surviving Helen are her son, Steve; and son, John, and daughter-in-law, Hayley, and their children, Fisher, Maxwell, and Jocelyn; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; sisters, Elizabeth Mueller and Doris Wildermuth and brother, Richard.
A memorial service will be held at Edgewood Assisted Living Center in Spearfish, with burial next to her husband, Jim, at the National Cemetery in Sturgis.
