IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harold
Sulzbach
August 27, 1928 – March 29, 2023
Harold was born August 27, 1928, the fifth of 10 boys to Charles F. and Laura E. Zurcher Sulzbach in Alliance, NE. He died March 29th, 2023, at the age of 94 at Fort Meade Hospice Center, Sturgis, SD.
Harold was raised on the family farm north of Alliance, Nebraska which was homesteaded by his father, Uncle Will and Grandmother Elizabeth Michaelson Sulzbach. He met and married his sweetheart Lois E. (Rust). That same year he joined the Army and served as a mechanic in the 109th INF Medical Corp. This would become his occupation for a few years when he returned to Alliance after leaving the Army in December of 1952. After the birth of their first three children,Jacque, Sandra, and Gary, they moved to Vale, South Dakota to start a farming partnership with three of his brothers. This was dissolved in the mid-60s when some of the brothers wanted to raise beef cows and he wanted to continue in the dairy business. Their fourth child, Michelle, was born in the mid-70s. Now their family was complete.
When the three older children were grown and started their own families, Harold, Lois and Michelle moved off the farm and into the town of Vale, South Dakota where he helped manage the local water supply tower and worked at the Vale Lumber Company. His retirement years were spent in Spearfish, SD. He thoroughly enjoyed his work at GreenThumb in Spearfish at Historic D. C. Booth Fish Hatchery and was able to share many happy times with his grandchildren and great grandchildren by giving them unofficial tours over the years. He became a beloved member of the Hickory House community where his puzzle, card playing and dominos skills and quick wit have been greatly missed by friends and neighbors. In later years, Harold treasured a bond of friendship and support with his niece, Barb Sulzbach, who was always close by and a great blessing to him.
He is preceded in death by his wife Lois, oldest daughter Jacque, eight of his brothers, and his parents. He is survived by brother Norman and his wife Jean as well as sister-in-law Shirley Sulzbach. Also surviving are son-in-law David Miller, husband of Jacque, daughter Sandra (Sulzbach) Cook and her husband Mark Cook, son Gary Sulzbach and his wife Terry Seybold Sulzbach, and daughter Michelle Sulzbach (Aaron Frank). Six grandchildren remain: Rachael Sulzbach Dooley and partner Jason Todd, Chris Sulzbach and wife Marki Snyder Sulzbach, Tabitha Miller, Christopher Stricker, Heather Sulzbach Hendy and husband Daniel Hendy Jr,. and Teresa Miller Kellemeyer and husband Jed. Harold leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Chloe, Lily and Eli Sulzbach and Kamryn, Zachary, Skyler and Shiloh Hendy.
The family would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all those who have enriched Dad's life over the years.
