Greggary "Gregg"
Holtz
February 14, 1948 – March 21, 2026
A man known for his easy smile and "happy-go-lucky" spirit, Gregg passed away unexpectedly while on a walk with his wife, Linda, in Spearfish, SD. At 78, Gregg lived with a zest for life that defied his years. He was a friend to everyone, and his kind presence will be deeply missed.
Gregg was born on Valentine’s Day, 1948, in Pierre, SD, to Henry Holtz and Helen Peterman. He lived in Miller until 1958, when his family moved to Palm Springs, CA. Though he grew up in California, Gregg’s heart remained tied to the Midwest as he returned to South Dakota many summers in his youth to work and play on his uncle’s farm. A dedicated Eagle Scout, Gregg graduated from Palm Springs High School in 1966.
In 1970, Gregg was drafted into the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam. Upon returning, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona and enjoyed a long, successful career with the City of Palm Desert, retiring in 2001.
In 1981, Gregg married Linda and became a devoted dad to her two girls, Angela and Amber. In 1989, their son Garrett was born. The family moved back to South Dakota in 2000, settling in Spearfish. Gregg and Linda were the ultimate "groupies" for Garrett’s various bands, never missing a chance to hear him play.
Gregg and Garrett shared an unbreakable bond as best friends. Just recently, the two enjoyed a memorable father-son golf trip to California to visit relatives and hit the links.
An avid golfer, Gregg was a fixture at the Spearfish Canyon Golf Course, where he celebrated two career hole-in-ones. He was out there every chance he got, often scanning the weeds for lost golf balls to add to his legendary collection—treasures he took great joy in giving away to anyone who could use them.
Gregg is survived by his wife, Linda Zeigler Holtz; his children, Garrett Holtz (fiancée Saidee Short), Angela (Jeff) Wolter and Amber Flint; and his siblings, Gary Holtz, Sharon Riekert (Stephen Johnson), Steve (Jackie) Holtz and Sheryl Hines.
He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Alyssa Jones, Devin Wolter, Kylee Wolter, Savannah Jones, Canin Jones (fiancée Rachel Kuhl), Tristan Bryant and Talon Bryant. He also leaves behind his beloved grand-dog and frequent companion, Marvin.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 3, 2026, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Rosehill Cemetery with Military Honors. There will be a Celebration of Life at 12:00 PM at the Spearfish Canyon Golf Course.
