Obituary

Heaven gained a wonderful man on May 9, 2017. Greg Lind, 63, of Spearfish fought pulmonary fibrosis since January of this year and went to his heavenly home at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, CO while awaiting a double lung transplant.

Greg was born in Vermillion, SD on May 3, 1954 to L. Sterling and Grace (Peterson) Lind. He attended a rural school until high school and graduated from Vermillion High School in 1972. He attended SDSU in Brookings, SD majoring in civil engineering, where he met his soulmate.

Greg married Cheryl Gorter on May 15, 1976 in Pipestone, MN. They lived in Vermillion and Sioux Falls until moving to Spearfish in 1986. On February 20, 1981, he became the proud father to Cody and on September 7, 1988 to Elizabeth "Betsy".

Greg, along with his brother, Doug Lind, started Lind Excavating in 1971. They changed the name to Lind Exco, Inc. and incorporated in 1974, then later relocated to Rapid City. Greg has been referred to as the best excavator operator in the state of SD. Many times he was compared to John Wayne for his no nonsense attitude and very strong work ethic.

Greg enjoyed spending time with his family most of all. They enjoyed many family vacations traveling as well as camping in the Black Hills. In his spare time he liked to ride horse with Cody, gardening and tinkering in the garage. He was not one to sit and not do anything. Greg gladly donated a kidney to Cody in 2007.
Greg was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Associated General Contractors of SD, served on the Rapid City Trenching Board, and the American Quarter Horse Association.

The family is especially grateful for the excellent care from Dr. Forrest Brady of Spearfish and the medical staff at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion in Aurora, CO.

He is greatly missed by his wife, Cheryl, son, Cody (Janet), daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Jake Wright), granddaughter, Valerie, sister, Lori Eckrich (Jon) brother, Doug Lind (Penny), mother-in-law, Babe Gorter Johnson, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded to heaven by his parents, father-in-law, Lawrence W. Gorter and grandson, Colton Gregory Lind.
