Grace Alice ( Bormann) Unruh Hemeyer was born February 15th, 1934, to Ernest G. and Annette (Doering) Bormann in Mitchell, SD. Grace was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Stickney High School in 1951. After attending USD for two years, she taught grade school in Yankton, SD for two years.
In 1955, Grace married Wallace Unruh and lived in Springfield, SD. While there she taught in a rural school near Corsica, SD. For several years she taught kindergarten for six weeks each spring. Grace then became a teacher's aide for K through 8th grade and taught grade school vocal music. Grace also directed the choir at the Stickney Lutheran Church, did bookwork for a gas station and helped take care of her elderly parents.
In 1973, Grace and Wally moved to Spearfish, SD. Grace worked at the 1st National Bank as a teller for 8 years before becoming a teacher's aide at West Elementary School.
In 1988, California came calling, so Grace and Wally moved to Seal Beach, CA. While there, she was a teacher's aide at Hebrew Academy in Westminster, CA. After Wally's passing in 1994, Grace worked at a local real estate office as a receptionist.
In 2004, Grace moved back to Spearfish and married Delmer Hemeyer. Grace loved working with children, although she was not able to have any of her own. Grace enjoyed being part of Delmer's large family of five children, their spouses, 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where Grace and Delmer enjoyed the opportunity of being Sunday Morning Greeters for the Church Services. Grace and Delmer enjoyed traveling, camping, and fishing.
She was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Wallace Unruh, 2nd husband, Delmer Hemeyer, her parents, brothers, Ernest and Dennis. She is survived by five nieces, Lisa (Franz Ulrich) and their boys, Mark and Chris, Ellen Bormann, Sally (Brian Dott) and son Alex, Katheryn (Jeff Bunn) and daughter Randi, Elizabeth (Todd Dennis) and daughter Sara.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 20th from 2-4 at Fidler- Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral service will be held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on Monday, July 21st at 11am. Burial will follow at the Black Hills National Cemetery at 2:00pm.
