Obituary

Glenn Arthur Hogen, 89, from Spearfish, SD, completed his earthly sojourn at Edgewood Vista, November 13 ,2017.

On June 23, 1928, Glenn was born to Katherine Matilda and Martin Arthur Hogen in Lead, SD. He grew up in Lead and graduated from Lead High School. While growing up, he worked in every department in the Homestake Gold Mine including the Homestake Sawmill in Spearfish. At one time he was offered a forest management position in the Moskee area. He chose, instead, to pursue a career in teaching and coaching.

He married Jane Francis Smith on January 23, 1948 in Spearfish, SD. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Black Hills Teachers College in 1951, with a M.Ed., Master of Education from the University of Oregon in Eugene in 1961 and a Ph.D., Doctor of Philosophy also from the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR in 1977.
Glenn devoted his life to his family and education. He worked in public school systems across the country and in Europe. The last ten years of his career he accepted a critical assignment in the private education sector. He retired in 1991.

Glenn's first teaching/coaching job was in Nisland, SD. He held subsequent teaching and coaching positions in Gettysburg, SD, Pendelton, OR, Bitburg, Germany, Henderson, NV, Rapid City, SD and Lead, SD. He held school administrative positions in Lead, SD and Medford, OR. While he served as Superintendent of Schools in Lead, SD, Lead High School received the prestigious National Bellamy Award. The National Bellamy Award is given to a school which represents the state with the highest academic quality, citizenship, active student body, community service and patriotism. Lead High School is the only South Dakota school to have obtained that honorary designation.

After more than 30 years in public education he was recruited to be Vice President of Research and Development for the Sylvan Learning Corporation. During his tenure with Sylvan he developed the educational programs that would, establish the Sylvan Learning Corporation as the top diagnostic prescriptive educational company in the country. While with Sylvan he created The Sylvan Advisory Council with Dr. T.H Bell, Secretary of Education for the United States, as Senior Advisor and many other noteworthy leading professionals in the Education Field. He also appeared on several television talk shows such as The Today Show and Sally Jessy Raphael.as the concept of diagnostic prescriptive education swept the private education sector.

During his public career, Glenn served as President of the South Dakota School Administers Association, Evaluator for the North Central Accreditation Association where he annually represented the South Dakota Education Association at the annual NEA conference in Chicago, Il. Glenn was inducted into the Lead/Deadwood Hall of Fame in 2008. He received an' Outstanding Achievement as an Administrator' award from Black Hills State College in 1972.

Dr. Hogen's philosophy of education and educational access are aptly reflected in his statement, "If people are to find equality, they must first find education; otherwise, they are bound by the language of their society." GH 1986

Glenn believed that an individual could rise to the level to which they aspired if they availed themselves fully of educational opportunities.

He also was keenly aware of his civic duty, which caused him to take leaps of faith such as running for State Representative. He devoted countless hours to Hospice, an organization that he volunteered for into his mid 80's. In fact, his commitment earned him a certificate of appreciation for "Ten years of volunteer service to the Hospice of the Northern Hills" organization in 2013. Glenn's involvement with Hospice was instrumental in the development of his personal faith. He learned the power of the Gospel of Christ and the comfort contained within the promise of Christ's message, life and sacrificial death on the cross for the salvation of all mankind. Glenn was a man of great devotion to the church, He earned his way to a Fourth degree Knights of Columbus designation.

Glenn and Jane relished life and lived it to the fullest. In his private life, those who knew him, can attest to his passion for golf, his love of fly fishing, and his enjoyment of skiing. He and Jane were travelers at heart. After retirement they spent many years traveling across the country with their RV home in tow. The greatest highlight of their many, self-described adventures, was the summer they traveled from Spearfish to the southernmost point of the Baja Peninsula. From Baja they traveled to north of the Arctic Circle and back to Spearfish. Glenn often said the highlight of the journey was sitting on the porch of a tavern north of the Arctic Circle, having an ice cold beer, starring into the land of the Midnight Sun.

Surviving Glenn are his wife Jane; sister, Elaine Gartin of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Dale Hogen, Newell, SD; and son, Marty Hogen, Spearfish, SD; grandchildren; Justin Hogen, Bozeman, MT; Kai Hogen, Bozeman, MT; Misty Hogen, Newell, SD and Tyler Hogen, Newell, SD. Glenn has four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Annett Christiansen, brother, Bob Hogen and great grandchild, Abner Hogen.

Glenn will be missed by all who knew him. He had a passion for humor that sprang spontaneously from word Etymology, awkwardly written newspaper headlines and casual conversational observations. Among his favorite places to escape the pressures of being responsible for the education of an entire community of young people, was the north side of Spearfish Mountain where he spent countless hours tracking deer, sitting on a ridge surveying the landscape or, truth be told, taking naps. For Glenn, the hunt was the journey, not necessarily the kill, although no one was more proud and excited when one of the hunting party filled their tag.
