Gerald "Jerry" Koehler, 85 Spearfish, passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Center.
Gerald "Jerry" Walter Koehler was born at Ramona, SD on October 28, 1926 to Walter and Lydia (Fischer) Koehler. He became a Child of God in holy baptism in infancy and confirmed his faith at 13 years of age at St. John Lutheran Church in Ramona. He grew up on a farm west of Ramona and attended rural school for eight years. He graduated from Ramona High School. He farmed a year and a half before attending Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa and Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa where he received his Master of Divinity degree in 1952.
He married Roberta Kamper on June 15, 1952. To this union three sons were born: Nathan, Phil and Eric.
He was ordained into the ministry of The American Lutheran Church on June 29, 1952. Later they merged with two other Lutheran Churches to become the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, known as the ELCA. He served as a full-time pastor for 37 years in Lane, Highmore, Selby, Arlington, Colton and Sisseton all in South Dakota. After retirement he served as interim pastor and did supply preaching for 13 years.
He supervised seven interns and served on the following Synod and state committees, several as chairman: Parish Education, Board of Lutheran Social Services, and Support of Ministries.
In retirement, with his wife Roberta, he spent a number of winters in Rio Grande Valley Texas and summers in Spearfish. In 2003, they began living in Spearfish full time.
He was a member of the family of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, volunteered on the Fix-it Crew and numerous other areas. He volunteered at the Senior Center and Food Pantry. He also pursued his hobby of wood carving for many years.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Roberta; three sons, Nathan, Phil (Dawn) and Eric; five grandchildren, Garrett, Alex, Jon (Emily), Kristin, and Zachary; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Hildegard.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, September, 21, 2012 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Pastor Arley Fadness officiating. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. A memorial has been established to Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Hospice of the Northern Hills.
