Gerald "Jerry" Chumley Byrd, 72, of Spearfish, SD passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2nd, 2015 at his home.
Jerry was born on April 28th, 1942 in Port Arthur, TX the only child of R.C. & Frances Byrd. During his lifetime he enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting & fishing, and woodworking. Throughout his teen years Jerry was an accomplished athlete who held a Texas state shot-put record as well as playing football. Jerry also enjoyed drag racing at several tracks throughout Texas. Shortly after High School, he enlisted into the United States Air Force where he served his country for four years. During his Christmas break in 1961 he met the love of his life, Patricia Mann. On May 19, 1962 they were married. After his commitment to the military, they returned to TX. Shortly after returning home, Jerry purchased and managed his grandfathers G.I. surplus and shoe store in Silsbee, TX. During this time he also attended Lemar University in Beaumont, TX. In 1965, Jerry's first son, Wayne, was born. Jerry later went to work for Sears & Roebuck in 1969 as a manager in both Texas and Louisiana. In 1970 Jerry's second son, Steven, was born. In 1979 he moved his family to Gillette, WY and started a new career as a coal miner. He retired in 1995 from Amax Coal Co. Upon retirement, Jerry and Pat moved to Ft. Collins, CO to be closer to their children and their families where they spent 14 years before moving to Spearfish in 2010.
Throughout his life Jerry was a devoted Christian who always put his family as his top priority.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia; son, Steven (Kristy) Byrd; daughter in-law, Ranata Byrd; cousin, Betty (John) Gauntt; cousin, Debbie (Rocky) McWilliams; grandchildren, Hayden Byrd, Colter & Cannon Byrd, Ariana, Isaac, Makenna, & Brynna Coover, and Kian & Rylan Byrd.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R.C. & Frances Byrd; mother & father in-law, Earnest & Irma Mann; and his son, Gerald Wayne Byrd.
Memorial services will be at 10am Monday, February 9, 2015 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
A memorial has been established to benefit Hospice of the Northern Hills.
