George Vukovich - March 28, 1908 - Dec. 17, 2008
George Vukovich, resident of the Black Hills for 100 years, passed away peacefully Dec. 17th 2008 at Tender Care Assisted Living in Spearfish, SD.
George was preceded in death by his wife Marvelyn (Belden), parents Drago and Tomana (Subotich), brothers Melo and John and sisters Mary Mannick and Anne Gallo.
George is survived by his daughter Mary Keller (Anatoly) of Ben Lomond, CA, 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, his sister in law Virginia Vukovich of Tucson, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews.
George graduated from Lead High School in 1925 and was employed by Homestake until his retirement in 1972, whereupon he and Marvelyn moved to Spearfish and he worked for Fish and Hunter. He was a veteran of WWII, as were his brothers Melo and John. He was also an active church member, first in Lead at Christ Church Episcopal and later All Angels Episcopal in Spearfish. George and Marvelyn taught dancing to many in the Black Hills area. Anytime they went into a restaurant or store someone was sure to remark: "Why, I took dance lessons from you." We are certain that those remarks pleased George greatly. Being very active and light on his feet, George was an avid walker and could often be seen striding the streets of Spearfish dressed in his natty attire!
He will be missed greatly by his family and many friends. Our thanks go out to Edgar and Aileen Burr and the staff of Tender Care.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 15th 2009 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 16th 2009 at All Angels Episcopal Church, with Rev. Fr. Bunker Hill officiating, interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Memorials will be given to Disabled American Veterans.
