George Opitz, 91 of Spearfish, SD died on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at his home.

George was born on October 4, 1929 to John and Kristina Opitz in Spearfish. He attended school in Spearfish, graduating from Spearfish High School in 1948. He then ranched with his father, John until he married Erma Mauch in 1951. He returned to the family ranch where he built a home and planted innumerable trees which he loved and continued to add to until his death.

George spent many years as a Lawrence County Deputy Sheriff and later served as a Lawrence County Commissioner. He was a very strong outgoing "people person" who was interested in everyone's life.

He is survived by his wife, Erma; son, Michael (Georgianne) Opitz; daughter, Cindy (Bruce) Herman; grandchildren, Leah (Cory) Stroschein, Brea Hermann and Michael (Kelsey) Opitz; great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Anna, Brantley, Parker and Blaine.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
