Gary Ray Richards, 75, of Spearfish died surrounded by his loved ones in peace October 25, 2011 at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Gary was born January 15, 1936 to Magdaline (Jepsen) and Donald Ray Richards in Belle Fourche. He graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1954. Gary graduated from USD in 1958 with an undergraduate in US Government. From 1958-1960 he served his country in the US Army, returning to USD to graduate from USD Law School in 1962. He worked from 1962-64 for the US Department of Agriculture in Washington DC, then as Asst. Attorney General in Pierre SD until 1965, when he then moved to Spearfish to start a private law practice.
Gary met the love of his life Ann (Aitken) while attending law school, they married January 19, 1964.
After many years and many cases Gary temporarily retired from law in 1998, but began a practice with his son in 2000 until 2007.
Gary served his community in many ways and on multiple boards and commissions in Spearfish. This included acting as city attorney as well as representing the school system in addition to being one of the original commissioners of the SD Lottery Commission in 1987.
Gary and Ann were avid travelers including annual trips to Mexico, covering as many of the lower 48 as possible as well as attending his Colorado Rockies games in Denver. His home(s) away from home were his cabin at Iron Creek Lake, where he spent years and years fishing and relaxing, and Deer Camp where the best meals, friends and hunting stories (true or not) went around and around.
His strength and loyalty will be remembered and missed by his loving and loyal wife of 47 years, Ann, son Donald (Val) Richards, Spearfish, Susan (Randy) Connelly, Sioux Falls, SD, Christine (Chris) Williams, Spearfish and grandchildren Natalie and Cole Richards, Michelle and Jason Connelly, Marc, Chelsea and Olivia Williams.
Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 28, 2011 at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish, with Charlie Conger officiating, with a small reception following. The gravesite services with military honors will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery at 2:00 pm. A memorial has been established to benefit the Hospice of the Northern Hills.
