Obituary

Frances Kay Fremont Marshall, 88 of Spearfish, SD died on April 2, 2025.  She was surrounded by her children as she left this earth and stepped into the arms of Jesus.

Fran, as many knew her, was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on August 28, 1936, to parents, Garl and Mary Jane (Stutler) Gregory, and later two sisters, Lee and Phyllis, and brother, Roger joined the family. Fran enjoyed life as a youngster "down in the Holler", as she phrased it.  Growing up in Anmoore, WV, Fran learned the importance of God, family and community.  She knew how to work hard and has taught her children to carry on that heritage. Outdoor toilets, no running water, and oil lamps were a part of life that Fran experienced without complaint.  Frances was not a complainer!

Some years later, the Gregory family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Fran went to grade school.  She attended St. Paul Bible college in MN where she met and married Ken Fremont after attending 2 years of school.  Fran and Ken moved to the Yellowstone area, and then settled finally in Spearfish.

To that union were born eight wonderful kids…Jeff (Susan) Fremont of Big Timber, MT, Dale (CheRae) Fremont of Beulah, WY, Brian (Lauri) in Heaven, Melanie (Ralph) Weatherstone of Spearfish, LouEllen Wanken of Shelby, MT, David (Karen) Fremont of Spearfish, Tana Fremont of Spearfish, and Susan (Leon) Baler of Ashton, ID.

Fran was busy juggling motherhood, while doing odd jobs like waiting tables and doing sewing repairs for people around town. She always had home cooked meals, cookies, homemade dresses for the girls and then she made sure the family went to church every Sunday.  Fran studied real estate as she raised the kids, and successfully took on the role as a Realtor working first for Lewis and Kirkeby and retiring with the Century 21 team of Spearfish. Fran worked 45 years as a Realtor and loved it. Through real estate, Fran became acquainted with many people who are still good friends to her today.  In '82 Fran divorced and continued living in Spearfish.

In 1988, Fran married Roger Marshall.  From that marriage, she "inherited" three stepsons, Todd (Brenda),Shawn, and Kevin (Pam). Early in their marriage, Roger and Mom traveled often as a team seeing the country. Mom also took many "sister" trips which marked some of her most favorite adventures. Later in life, traveling with her kids became a yearly event for Fran.  She has been to nearly all of the states of the US.

Fran's favorite things are going to church weekly, watching Wheel of Fortune, reading, with the Bible being her most read book, and spending time with family and friends.  She was passionate about her relationship with Jesus Christ and prayed daily for others.  Fran also loved the time she spent with her 26 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.  If you know Fran, shopping was a favorite event especially when there was a sale, and garage sales were the best!

Fran was preceded in death by her siblings, son Brian, and grandson Bret. Today she is singing with all of them in Glory.  Fran Fremont Marshall will be missed by many!

She has impacted and inspired all to keep going forward.
