Obituary

Fran Schirber, 88 of Spearfish died Friday, April 11th 2008 at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Spearfish.

Fran Schirber was born October 13, 1919 and raised in Firesteel, SD. She was the daughter of Nick and Margaret (Thul) Bornong. Fran's bothers and sisters included Leone Bornong, Clarence (Kelly) Bornong, Harold Bornong, Mary Bornong Scheer (all deceased) and a surviving brother, John Bornong of Sioux City, IA.
Fran married Walt Schirber on June 11, 1941 in Isabel, SD and they lived in Montevideo, MN; South St. Paul & Minneapolis, Lemmon and Spearfish. Prior to her marriage Fran received a teaching certificate from Northern State and was a country school teacher in Dewey County for several years.
Fran and Walt had five children and raised their family in Lemmon. Survivors include 4 sons and their spouses: Walter Jr. "Bud" & Christy, Richfield, MN; Mike & Merna, Papillion, NE; Tom & Julie, Houston, TX; Steve & Diane, Rapid City; & son-in-law, Gary Evjen, Sisseton, SD who was married to Fran's only daughter, Margaret who passed away in 1998. Fran is also survived by her 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Fran was known and will be remembered as a kind, generous person with a great sense of humor, a loyalty to her friends and family and an undeniable faith in God. She had a passion for life, endured the joys and sufferings of life and never lost her trust and faith as time went by. Fran was a marvelous cook and loved to entertain friends at the family cabin in Spearfish Canyon; she and Walt traveled the world and her most favorite journey was to Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
She was known as Grandma Cabin as each of the grandchildren has special trips and moments at the cabin. Fran treated all as special, loved each for their special traits and was always encouraging to all. She was immensely proud of her family, always providing support and direction and she set a wonderful example for all.
During her lifetime she was involved in many activities in her community and church, she volunteered her time to anyone who asked and was always giving of her time and talent. She loved playing bridge, golfing, reading, traveling and taking care of her family.
Like so many of her generation, she experienced the great depression, the dirty thirties, the many wars, and all of the major events and all she ever wanted was the best for her family and community. She will be sorely missed but she will be long remembered for the example she set for all who knew her.
