Obituary

Floyd W. Tetreault, 81, of Spearfish, SD, passed away, Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Ft. Meade VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., July 19th 2007 at All Angels Episcopal Church in Spearfish, with Reverend Father Bunker Hill officiating. A reception will follow the services.

In lieu of flowers memorials may directed to benefit the Spearfish Food Pantry or All Angels Episcopal Church of Spearfish.

Floyd was born in 1926 to Bert and Marie (Stanton) Tetreault and raised in the St. Onge area. After high school he joined the US Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands for three years. In 1951, Floyd married Frances Louise Woods and both graduated form the University of Wyoming in 1954, where Floyd earned a Bachelor of Science in animal study and education and Frances in education. His first professional position was an AG teacher in Riverton, Wyoming. After teaching for several years, he assumed the position of Manager of the State Fair in Douglas, Wyoming as Fair Director, and was particularly supportive of participation in 4-H and FFA exhibitions and livestock showings. He also loved hosting many other events on the fairgrounds throughout the year. Floyd became director of the North American Indian Days Foundation, which sponsored All American Indian Days in Sheridan, WY he held that position for several years, before managing his own ranch for five years at Oshoto, WY. He then went to work for the American Breeders Association and traveled from Canada to South America. Floyd also was involved with ranch managing and had partnerships in Wyoming and Oklahoma.

During the latter years of his professional career, he was devoted to the Tarentaise breed of cattle and in 1997 he was honored by the American Tarentaise Hall of Fame. He was the first person to bring the Tarentaise breed to the United States. In the 1990's at the Calgary Stampede, the Tarentaise won the prestigious award of "International Cattle Breed of the World."

Floyd led an exemplary life devoted to his wife, children an all the animals he loved and cared for during his life. He will be deeply missed by his family and hundreds of friends who sought his wisdom and advice through the years. He was a man of both remarkable kindness and remarkable intellect.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Frances Tetreault of Spearfish, son Bill Tetreault of Maryland, daughter Susan Tetreault of Spearfish, brother, Bud (Bev) Tetreault of Spearfish, and four grandchildren.
