Obituary

Evelyn Caroline Terry, 95, of Spearfish, SD, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016, surrounded by loved ones, at the Spearfish Regional Hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24 at the Spearfish United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will take place in Aberdeen, SD, on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. (CST).

The youngest of 13 children, Evelyn was born on April 8, 1921, in Bristol, SD, to August Dahlke and Bertha (Sherer) Dahlke. She married Dolph "Gus" Whitted at a young age and to this union two sons and two daughters were born. Evelyn spent many years getting up at the crack of dawn to go to her waitressing job. She also helped Gus in his TV and radio repair business and traveled to movie theatres in the area to assist him as a projectionist. She and Gus were married for 30 years.

Evelyn met Wayne Cash Terry in Mobridge while bowling. They were married in 1973 and settled in Aberdeen. She then dedicated her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, community and church volunteer, and traveler. She and Wayne traveled and "camped" from coast to coast in their converted van. They went to the National Square Dancing Convention in Seattle and the National Bowling Tournament in Denver and drove through Canada to Alaska. Her favorite place was the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. After Wayne passed away in 2002, she stayed in Aberdeen for a while and then moved to Spearfish. She grew to love the Black Hills and was very happy being close to the majority of her family.

Evelyn loved to visit and spend time with her children and grandchildren. She and Wayne would show up with buckets of cookies and a couple loaves of her famous banana bread. They would want to help around the house or in the yard, so you had to make sure you had a clean house before they arrived or sure enough, you'd find them sweeping, shaking rugs, picking up lint off the carpet, pulling weeds, or mowing the lawn.

Evelyn had a great sense of humor and would say, "I just love to make people laugh." Although very humble, she also enjoyed being the center of attention.

Years ago, one of her daughters-in-law gave her the nickname, "Evelyn Gazette," because she knew what was going on with everyone. She would report family news in a nonjudgmental and straightforward way. If anyone needed to know someone's birth date, we asked Evelyn, because she knew them all. She had a special place in her heart and memory for all family, no matter the origin.

Evelyn was a 30-year member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. Over the years, she was an active member of the Ladies Circle, Mason Ladies, and Ladies of the Moose Club. She loved to bowl, square dance, bake and cook, crochet, and work jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid baseball and basketball fan and knew the names of all the players on her favorite teams.

Grateful and honored to have shared her life are her children, David (Roxey) Whitted, Spearfish; Edith Whitted, Wasilla, AK; Carolyn Chipman, Spearfish; Jeffery (Pam) Whitted, Rapid City; stepsons Craig (Georgianne) Terry, Aberdeen; Allan (Connie) Terry, Manhattan, KS; numerous nieces and nephews, 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved Wayne, her parents, all of her siblings, and a grandson, Dean Chipman.
