Obituary

Evelyn O. Looney, born March 2, 1925, died at her son's home in Spearfish, SD, after a brave struggle with cancer. Her perennial optimism and enthusiastic spirit will be missed by all those who knew her.

In 1946 she began her career as an educator with her first teaching position at a country school in the Appalachian Mountains of western Virginia. As an Air Force wife she spent several years on SAC air bases in Montana, California and Arizona. In 1961 she located to Hialeah, FL, and became a devoted first grade teacher with the Dade County School System. In later years she became a curriculum specialist, administration assistant, and assistant principal.

She earned degrees from East Tennessee State University, University of Miami, and Barry University, Miami Shores, FL.

In 1988 she retired from the Dade School System and focused her energies as a professional volunteer. She was a Dade reading tutor, a Hialeah Salvation Army volunteer and Advisory Board member, a mission volunteer in the Presbyterian Church, a VITAS Hospice Volunteer, and an Elder and Deacon with Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Miami Lakes.

Evelyn walked the talk in her love of God. She strove to acknowledge Him and sought God's direction in every endeavor in life. Her signature phrase, "Go with God," guided her well through the challenges of her cancer treatment.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Donald C. Looney (Barbara) and grandchildren; Shane Looney and Brynne Looney of Spearfish, SD, her sisters-in-law, Betsy O'Neill of Rome, NY, Frances O'Neill of Lincolnton, GA, and Nyrell Looney of Virginia Beach, VA, and by several nieces and nephews.

She requested no formal service or celebration of life.
