Evelyn L. Dingeman, 87, Spearfish, died on October 21, 2014, in Spearfish.
Evelyn was born on November 18, 1926 to George and Georgeanna (Anderson) Keffeler in her grandmother's home in Sturgis. She was raised on the farm and attended grade school at the Doyle School, Hereford, SD and graduated from New Underwood High School in 1945 where she excelled in declam and enjoyed writing and preparing the annual yearbook for publication.
On May 14, 1945, Evelyn married John Dingeman and they established their married life on the Dingeman homestead in rural Meade County. It was there that their daughter Dianna was born in 1948 and Shirley in 1950. Together, Evelyn and John worked "the ranch" and raised "the girls". Evelyn became an integral part of the community participating in all things social and of community service. Always willing to lend a hand to help her local school, church and neighborhood, Evelyn also participated in Extension Club, Sewing Circle, 4-H Club Leader and local Election boards.
In 1962, John, Evelyn and family moved to Spearfish where Evelyn began her career in retail working for JC Penney, Black Hills Artcraft and Job Service. Following her retail experience, Evelyn became an ardent volunteer for her beloved community of Spearfish. She was active with the Hospital Auxiliary, sewing over 2,000 tummy pillows throughout the years. She served 12 years on the Board of Directors of the Spearfish Senior Center which she often referred to as her second home. She enjoyed playing cards, acting in plays, aerobics, seeing her friends, and serving on various committees there to help support the seniors in her community. She was a member of The United Methodist Church, volunteered at the Mathews Opera House and a member of the Women Of The Moose for forty years. Evelyn received numerous awards for her volunteer work throughout the years.
Being a self-avowed people person, Evelyn loved to have fun and spent 17 years dancing with the Lookout Mountain Cloggers and was a member of the "Red Hatters" . She loved theater, travel, reading, and creative writing through poetry. As Mom, Grandma, and GG, Evelyn was immensely proud of her family and truly a blessing to them as well as to her extended family and friends.
Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Dianna Fitzgerald, Hawthorne, NV and Shirley (Johnnie) Johnson of MN and AZ; grandchildren, Jason (Rhiannon) Johnson, Savage, MN, Leslie (Keith) Helmbacher, Elko New Market, MN, Stacia (Shawn) Wilson, Mahtomedi, MN and Joseph Corcoran, Phoenix, AZ; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Payton, Stella, Gavin and Caelyn; sister, Phyllis (Stanley) Miner, Rapid City; sister-in-law, Jean Keffeler, Whitewood and numerous special nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, brother, Marvin and sisters, Marlys, Carol and Beverly.
Visitation will be from 3-5 P.M. on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 27 at the United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Spearfish Senior Citizens Center following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Spearfish Senior Center and also Mooseheart Child City.
