Ethel Emma (Even) Blindert, 94, died Sunday, November 24, 2013 at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center in Spearfish.
Ethel was born April 13, 1919 along with her twin brother, Edward, to George and Mary (Reecy) Even. She was raised on the family farm and received her education at Thunder Hawk, SD. She worked in Lemmon, SD and Missoula, MT during the 1930's. In 1940 she traveled to Long Beach, CA where she worked in a factory office during World War II. It was here that she met John Blindert. John and Ethel married on September 5, 1942 at the Saint Matthews Catholic Church in Long Beach. Upon John's return from the service, Ethel and John moved back to Lemmon, SD briefly then moved to Hettinger, ND and Winner, SD for John's career with Fullerton Lumber Company. Ethel and John lived and raised their five children in Winner, SD from 1953 to 1982. They were members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner. In the early 1970's Ethel began her career as a clerk in the clothing department at the Outlaw Trading Post and later became the Manager of the shoe department. She was the "go to gal" for shoes in the Winner area. In 1982 Ethel and John moved to Spearfish where they managed the Harvard Estates and Jackson Heights Apartments. In the fall of 1993 they retired and moved to Mitchell, SD, returning to Spearfish again in 2000 to live out their "golden years". They were members of the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish. Ethel was a member of the Catholic Daughters in Winner, SD, a life time member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team and country music star George Strait. While retired, Ethel enjoyed sewing handmade dolls which she donated to children with cancer.
Ethel was survived by her four daughters; Sharon (Ron) Love, San Antonio, TX, Mary (Harry) Axemaker, Mitchell, SD, Liz Blindert, Rapid City, SD, and Marty (Rich) Willms, Black Hawk, SD, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, seven brothers and one sister, her son Byron Leo Blindert and her grandson Casey James Madison.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spearfish. Burial will take place at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
