Estes L. Edwards, 95, of rural Spearfish, began his life on October, 15, 1914 at Loveland Colorado. Estes passed away on March 6, 2010 at the ranch during the evening with family.
He was the third son of Sim and Nellie (Nisley) Edwards who ranched in Montana, Wyoming and had a truck farm in Spearfish Valley where he was active in the first 4-H Sheep and Hog club in Lawrence County. Estes was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Noel and Frank. His younger brother Allan is retired in Chandler, Arizona, with his wife Jane and enjoying life close to his daughters Janice and Linda and their children and grand children.
Estes was active in farming and ranching in the moskee and Crow Peak areas of the Black Hills all his life with his brothers and the Lloyd Tysdal family. He had a rich life, riding his 4-wheeler around the place, and enjoying his favorite fishing holes and hunting areas in the Hills. He was active in the Odd Fellows. He was a top contender in the bridge club that was organized in the Crow Peak Community.
Estes spent most of his working life working for Homestake Mining Company as a mechanic and retired after his working years to continue the ranch. He made many friends and acquaintances during his time and had many good memories.
Estes married Inga (Tysdal) Edwards on July 19, 1943 and they had four sons: Charles, Norm, John and Carl. Charles lives in the Crow Peak area with his wife Barbara and their three children; Eric, Amanda and Sarah, who all live in the Spearfish area. Norm, his second son, lives in Phoenix in the winter and Spearfish in the summer is retired from the Federal Government. John is a pilot for United Airlines and lives in Spearfish and Loveland, Colorado with his son Matthew who in active in Lacrosse, snowboarding and school activities. Carl, the youngest son, and his daughter Lauren live in Spearfish and both are active in the Northern Hills Training Center and Special Olympics.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 12, 2010 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Spearfish with Pastor Karen Matuska officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.
A memorial will be established in lieu of flowers to benefit the Good Shepherd Clinic in Spearfish.
